Fotografiska and The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign Launch “One in Eight”

Berlin, Stockholm, Munich, 09.Juli 2026

A global open call invites emerging artists to share authentic perspectives on breast cancer through photography, marking the start of a multi-market partnership across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden. Fotografiska and The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign are joining forces to launch One in Eight, a new cultural initiative using the power of photography to bring breast cancer awareness into contemporary culture – and into more open, visible and human conversation.

The partnership launches today with a global open call via Fotografiska Emerging, inviting emerging photographers and visual artists worldwide to submit lens-based works that offer an authentic perspective on what it means to be affected by breast cancer, directly or indirectly.

Worldwide, four women are diagnosed with breast cancer every minute. One in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in her lifetime. Behind these figures are deeply personal realities: uncertainty, fear and loss, but also strength, care, recovery, community and hope.

For more than 30 years, The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign has helped drive global awareness, fund life-saving research and support education and medical services around the world. In 2026, the Campaign enters a new cultural chapter through its partnership with Fotografiska, one of the world’s leading destinations for photography and visual culture.

Marking a first for The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, One in Eight brings one creative concept to life across multiple markets and affiliates, with activations planned in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden. The initiative combines Fotografiska’s cultural platform, The Estée Lauder Companies’ long-standing commitment to helping create a breast cancer-free world, and the expertise of local NGO partners working closely with people affected by breast cancer.

At its core, the partnership is built on a shared belief: that photography can make visible what is too often left unseen. By inviting artists to share intimate, respectful and authentic perspectives on breast cancer, the initiative aims to challenge taboos, break silos and create space for conversations around awareness, early detection, care and community.

Submissions are open until 12 August 2026, 10:00 CEST. A jury composed of Fotografiska’s curatorial team, representatives of The Estée Lauder Companies, and participating local NGO partners will select 10 final artworks. The selected works will be presented at Fotografiska Berlin and Fotografiska Stockholm throughout October 2026, which is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with dedicated exhibition events bringing the initiative to life across Berlin, Stockholm, Zurich, Vienna and Munich.

Each selected artist will receive a prize of EUR 1,500 and may be featured across communications by Fotografiska and The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign, as well as through selected local activations connected to the initiative.

To extend the impact beyond visibility, printed posters featuring the ten final artworks will be made available for purchase. All net proceeds from poster sales will benefit participating local NGO partners supporting people affected by breast cancer in their respective markets.

“Breast cancer is deeply personal – and yet, its realities too often remain unseen or unspoken,” says Linda Hoeck, General Manager, The Estée Lauder Companies DACH. “For more than three decades, The Estée Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Campaign has stood for awareness, action and the belief that we can help create a breast cancer-free world. But we cannot do this alone.

We need strong partners who stand shoulder to shoulder with us, partners who bring credibility, cultural relevance, and deep community connection. Together with Fotografiska and our local NGO partners, we want to use the power of photography to amplify intimate perspectives, spark dialogue and turn awareness into meaningful support.

In Germany, one of the local partners helping to amplify awareness about breast cancer is dasBUUSENKOLLEKTIV e.V., an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering people affected by breast cancer through community, education and authentic exchange. FRAUEN100 will further support the initiative as co-host of the Berlin Gala moment, helping bring One in Eight to life in a way that connects awareness, culture and community with purpose. In October 2026, the initiative will be activated through dedicated exhibition events in Berlin and Munich. Further details will be announced closer to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Photography has always been a medium that connects us to what is real,” says Pauline Benthede, Global Vice President Artistic Direction and Exhibitions, Fotografiska. “With One in Eight, we want to create a platform for emerging artists to approach breast cancer with honesty, sensitivity and artistic strength. As a cultural institution, we have a responsibility to use our platform for conversations that matter, bringing intimate perspectives into public space and creating moments of connection for artists, audiences and communities alike.”

Artists can submit photographic work via the Fotografiska Emerging platform. AI-generated images are not eligible. Each submission should be accompanied by a short caption sharing the story or perspective behind the image.
